Goodbye Fantasy Fest…Hello Parrotheads

After a crazy week of creative costumes and shocking sites, Key West is finally quiet…for now. This week the Jimmy Buffett fans, known as Parrotheads swoop down on our island. Who knows, maybe “the man” himself will decide to perform this year. Dressed in tropical shirts and matching caps, they are a fun loving group. Most importantly, unlike our Fantasy Fest visitors, they party with their clothes ON!

Key West Chamber of Commerce

The Key West Chamber is not only a helpful resource for local businesses, they also provide excellent visitor information. This morning, we had a breakfast meeting with the staff at the Chamber’s new location at 510 Greene Street. We were able to share information and answer questions about our wedding business (and enjoy fresh baked muffins from Key West Cakes).

Dining Under the Stars

We took advantage of a breezy summer evening to dine under the stars at the Roof Top Cafe. The lobster and gnocchi appetizer was yummy and filling enough to be a meal. Especially if you use your bread to scoop up the creamy sauce. Luckily we shared. For our entrees we chose the silk snapper special and mahi-mahi. Nicolas, our server, was an expert at describing Chef Brendan’s creative dishes. No room for dessert. Really, you shouldn’t be so full after eating seafood, right?

Key West Oldest House and Gardens

While residing in Key West for the winter, Patricia and Chris decided to get married at the Oldest House Museum and Gardens. Wearing the wedding attire they purchased on their vacation in Hawaii and purple orchid leis, they said their vows in the rear garden, surrounded by family and friends. Located on Duval Street, just a few blocks from the cruise docks, this is also a convenient wedding location for couples arriving by cruise ship.

Meagan and Simon traveled all the way from Australia to get married in Key West. Through the years, I have performed ceremonies for couples from all over the world and it still amazes me. Thanks to the power of the web (yes, there was a time it didn’t exist!), email and Skype, we can now easily communicate and do business with couples from around the globe.

Key West Garden Wedding

Our beach wedding package is definitely our most popular. However, Nicole and Kevin are Floridians and already live near a beach, so they wanted something different. Fortunately, Key West has many lovely garden wedding locations. The Key West Garden Club is located in the West Martello Fort and overlooks the Atlantic Ocean. The brick archway, lush greenery and flowers make great photo opportunities. Click here to view the wedding photo gallery. Plus they have reasonable site fees and offer chair rentals.

Key West Cruise Ship Weddings

The most frequent question I receive is “what if in rains?”. Luckily, our weddings are rarely affected by rain. If it does happen, I feel rescheduling is the best option. After all, you are coming to Key West for a beach wedding. However, for our couples arriving by cruise ship, this may not be possible. There was a light drizzle when Jamie and Joe arrived on the Carnival Imagination and the radar didn’t look encouraging. We considered indoor options on the island but, much to my surprise, they were able to arrange for Gary and I to board the cruise ship. I pronounced them “husband and wife” in the ship’s library and Gary took some photos around the ship. It even cleared enough for us to take some fun shots on the deck.

When Debbie and Steve asked their close friends Carrie and Paul to join them in Key West for a simple beach wedding and fun vacation, they thought it was a great way to get married. In fact, after some discussion, they all decided to get married - at the same time. I began the ceremony with my typical intro, then had each couple exchange vows and rings separately. After the ending, I pronounced each couple “husband and wife” individually. Gary then took their posed photos until sunset. They then went to the Commodore for their wedding dinner. Our first double wedding was a success.

The pinky-thumb thing…

The majority of our weddings consist of just the bride and groom, no guests. Basically, it’s just the two of you and the two of us, standing in the sand…very intimate. However, that means no best man, maid of honor or ring bearer. What do you do with the rings? So, the groom holds the bride’s ring on his pinky and the bride holds the groom’s ring on her thumb. I have done this hundreds of times and it’s always worked great - until last week. When it came time for the bride to place the ring on the groom’s finger, she said “I don’t have the ring”! I was sure she had it on her thumb before we started and we hadn’t moved from our spot next to a palm tree. So, of course, we immediately started searching around their feet and couldn’t find the ring. We were in sand. There was no way it could have rolled. Gary began running his fingers through the sand and after 5 long minutes, finally found it - about 4 inches from her feet. It had sunken into the sand!
